India’s Bose Institute Wins Global Physics Award

Scientists from the Bose Institute’s Experimental High Energy Physics (HEP) group have been honored with the prestigious 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. This recognition comes as part of their contributions to the ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) collaboration at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s most powerful particle accelerator .

The award acknowledges the collaborative efforts of researchers from the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and LHCb experiments at CERN. Their work has led to detailed measurements of Higgs boson properties, discoveries of new strongly interacting particles, studies of rare processes and matter-antimatter asymmetry, and explorations of nature under extreme conditions .

The 2025 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, often referred to as the “Oscars of Science,” carries a total monetary award of $3 million. The prize money is distributed among the four collaborations, with ALICE receiving $500,000 .

The Bose Institute’s participation in the ALICE collaboration highlights India’s significant role in global scientific research and its contributions to advancing our understanding of fundamental physics.
