A Triumph of Precision Neurosurgery: Aster CMI Successfully Excises Rare Brain Tumor in Elderly Patient

Pioneering Approach and Technology Save Life of Elderly Woman with Rare Intraventricular Meningioma

In a remarkable showcase of clinical excellence and precision in neurosurgery, Aster CMI Hospital successfully treated a rare and complex brain tumor in an elderly woman aged 75 years, significantly improving her quality of life. The patient presented to the department with gait imbalance and limb weakness since 18 months. Her MRI imaging of the brain showed an Intraventricular meningioma. The tumor was measuring around 5x 5.5 x 4.9 cms, large lobulated dural-based in the left frontal horn of the lateral ventricle with ventricular enlargement.

Intraventricular meningiomas are an uncommon subset of brain tumors that arise within the brain ventricular system, fluid-filled cavities deep in the brain. Representing less than 3% of all intracranial meningiomas. These tumors often go undetected until they cause significant neurological symptoms due to their concealed location. Their deep-seated positioning makes diagnosis and surgical intervention challenging. It also requires high-precision neurosurgical expertise and advanced intraoperative technology. Left untreated, they can severely impact a patient’s mobility, cognition, and overall quality of life.

The surgery was performed under the leadership of Dr. Ravi Gopal Varma, Director-Aster Global Institute of Neurosciences & Lead Consultant – Neurosurgery. He said, “Our team performed a midline fronto-parietal craniotomy with interhemispheric transcallosal approach, using neuronavigation and neuromonitoring to completely excise the tumor. Complete excision of the tumor was a critical achievement, even though tumor was deep-seated and in a delicate location with sensitive structures surrounding it. Despite initial post-operative complications including seizures, right-sided weakness, and speech difficulties, the patient made a progressive recovery with the help of rehabilitation in our hospital.

Dr. Ravi Gopal Varma, Lead Consultant – Neurosurgery, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, reflecting on the complexity of the case, said, “This surgery was particularly challenging due to the tumor’s location and the patient’s age. However, using cutting-edge technology like neuronavigation and neuromonitoring, we were able to fully remove the tumor. The patient’s recovery underscores the importance of advanced neurosurgical techniques and teamwork in managing rare intracranial tumors.”

Mr. SGS Lakshmanan, COO, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, added, “This case is a testament to our commitment to clinical excellence and innovation. At Aster CMI Hospital, we are proud to support a highly skilled neurosurgical team equipped with the latest medical technologies, enabling them to take on some of the most complex cases. Our focus continues to be on delivering world-class outcomes with compassion and care.”

Aster CMI Hospital continues to be a pioneer in offering advanced medical treatments and remains dedicated to providing exceptional care to its patients.
