TDB Boosts Desi Camouflage Systems for Defence

In a significant boost to India’s self-reliance in defense technology, the Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology, has extended support to M/s Meta Tattva Systems Pvt. Ltd. for the indigenous development and commercialization of multi-spectral camouflage systems designed for strategic defense applications.

The project is based on the Anālakṣhya Metamaterial Surface Cloaking System (MSCS) — a cutting-edge stealth technology developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. This advanced textile-based metamaterial aims to provide near-perfect electromagnetic wave absorption across a broad spectrum, effectively countering Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging and reducing visibility to radar-guided weapons and reconnaissance systems.

The Anālakṣhya MSCS is the result of a multi-year research effort by a multidisciplinary team comprising Prof. Anantha Ramakrishna (Physics), Prof. Kumar Vaibhav Srivastava (Electrical Engineering), and Prof. J. Ramkumar (Mechanical Engineering), along with their students. The system has undergone rigorous laboratory and field testing under various environmental conditions to validate its performance and scalability.

TDB’s support will facilitate the transfer of this indigenous technology to Meta Tattva Systems Pvt. Ltd., enabling full-scale production for military use. The Indian Armed Forces have shown keen interest in deploying this next-generation stealth system to enhance survivability and operational effectiveness in hostile environments.

“This is a proud moment for Indian science and industry,” said a TDB spokesperson. “The project exemplifies the spirit of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ by translating high-impact academic research into strategic defense capabilities.” The camouflage system’s deployment will mark a critical step toward strengthening India’s technological edge in modern warfare and establishing domestic manufacturing capabilities in advanced defense materials.
