An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Vice Admiral Kochhar was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1988. A specialist in Gunnery and Missile Systems, he has held a wide range of command, operational and staff appointments during his naval career.
The Flag Officer has commanded several frontline warships, including INS Nashak, INS Vibhuti and INS Kirpan. He also served as the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the stealth frigate INS Trikand and later commanded the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, overseeing the successful integration and operationalisation of its air wing.
Before assuming the role of Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Kochhar served as Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, India’s only integrated tri-services theatre command, where he played a key role in strengthening operational readiness and maritime security in the strategically important region.
Recognised for his operational expertise and strategic leadership, Vice Admiral Kochhar has been associated with several key naval initiatives and high-level operational planning. His appointment comes at a time when the Indian Navy continues to focus on force modernisation, maritime security and enhanced operational preparedness across the Indo-Pacific region.
With his elevation as the 48th Vice Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Kochhar is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the Navy’s future capabilities and advancing India’s maritime interests.
